HERITAGE TURKEYS
Color Variety
CHOCOLATE
The name describes the color of its feathers, shanks and feet. They used to be common in the south and in France. This turkey variety was well established in the southern part of the U.S. before the Civil War which caused a great decline in turkey breeding throughout the southeastern states and the Chocolate turkey never recovered to pre-war popularity. As poults, the chocolate turkeys will have yellowish/white feathers on their head and wing tips, which they out grow quickly. They are a gentle breed and can reproduce naturally.
BRONZE
The Bronze is a breed of domestic turkey. The name refers to its plumage, which bears an iridescent bronze-like sheen. The Bronze had been the most popular turkey throughout most of American history, but waned in popularity beginning in the mid-20th century.
BOURBON RED
The Bourbon Red turkeys are large birds with very beautiful appearance. Their feathers are of a dark base color with white primaries in the tail characterized by a soft red band and white flight feathers. Both the wings and tail feature chestnut coverts.
NARRAGANSETT & GOLDEN NARRAGANSETT
The Narragansett turkey is named for Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island, where the variety was developed. It descends from a cross between native Eastern Wild turkeys and the domestic turkeys (probably Norfolk Blacks) brought to America by English and European colonists beginning in the 1600’s.
The Narragansett color pattern contains black, gray, tan, and white. Its pattern is similar to that of the Bronze. The Golden Narragansett
variety is basically a Narragansett carrying a single red gene. The red gene in combination with the narragansett gene changes the steel gray color of the typical Narragansett to a golden coloration.
This variety produces three results: Narragansett, Golden Narragansett and a bronze based Buff.
The Narragansetts and Buffs produced will breed true.
Narragansett toms can also be bred to Golden Narragansett hens (or vise versa) which will produce Narragansetts and Golden Narragansetts 50/50 ,with no buffs being produced in this cross.
SLATE
The Bronze is a breed of domestic turkey. The name refers to its plumage, which bears an iridescent bronze-like sheen. The Bronze had been the most popular turkey throughout most of American history, but waned in popularity beginning in the mid-20th century.
